Software:
The Software for the Spawn is versatile and maintains an easy to use and intuitive layout. The interface is broken down into four panels, each with their own control sets. The “Main Control” panel of the Storm Spawn interface gives basic controls for the mouse. All buttons are easily assignable through drop down boxes, and standard functions, such as double click speed, scroll speed and pointer acceleration, are accessed here. The Storm Spawn’s “Macro” panel allows easy programming of multiple keystrokes to one mouse click. Simply enter the name for a new macro and record the keystrokes you would like assigned. The macro will then be available for button assignment in the main panel. Since the macros are actually stored in the Cooler Master Storm Spawn itself, they will work on any computer with the base Storm Spawn software installed.
The “Custom” panel in the Storm Spawn’s software allows for tweaking . Since the Storm Spawn is capable of changing DPI on the fly, the parameters for these changes can be customized. The “Custom” panel also allows for adjustment of polling rate. “Polling rate” is the speed at which changes are monitored through USB. In other words, with standard USB 125Hz polling rate, mouse positioning is updated every 8ms. Upping the polling rate to 500Hz will update positioning every 2ms, and 1000Hz every 1ms. Obviously, faster polling rates allow the Storm Spawn to respond much more smoothly than the conventional 125Hz . The “Custom” panel allows for adjustment of mouse pointer speed, as well. The “Support/Update “panel of the Spawn software offers a one click update check, as well as a link to online support.
Testing:
To test the Cooler Master Storm Spawn mouse, I simply sat down and ran through my everyday activities. It was difficult to get used to at first, since I was used to a larger, taller gaming mouse. After a while of using it for standard applications I got the hang of it. Since I have larger hands I had a tendency to move my hand towards the back of the mouse. The mouse was comfortable at first, but then became hard to use will using it for an extended time.
I just couldn’t get used to the shorter (length) design of the Spawn. It was fine for standard use, but I found it to be more difficult to use when used for an extended time. If you have smaller hands, this mouse would probably be perfect for you.
Conclusion:
Throughout the whole review, I really only had one thing that I did not like. The Spawn seems to be a tad short for gamers with larger hands. Other than that, It would be hard to find something really wrong with the Spawn. The Cooler Master Storm Spawn with a price of $49.99 is a heavy contender in the budget PC gamer’s market.
